Abstract: In the frst part of his article the author analyses the ecclesiastical and political circumstances in the empire which rendered the triple function of the Archbishop of Salzburg: as a prince of the ecclesiastical principality, a metropolitan of the Bavarian ecclesiastical province and a pastor of the territorially extremely vast and demanding Archbishopric of Salzburg. In the second part of the article the author analyses the Charter of the Lavantine Diocese of 10 May 1228, by means of which the Lavantine Archbishop was stripped of the competence as an ordinary and completely subjected to the Archbishop of Salzburg. The Lavantine bishops were in fact vicars general in the entrusted territory, subjected to the Archbishop of Salzburg until the reforms by Joseph II entered into force.
