Abstract:        The frst half of the 19th century was marked by the process of forming a unifed new Slovene standard language. The changes afected all the levels of language, even the lexical level of terminological expressions. The comparative linguistic analysis of the selected Slomšek catechisms and sermons reveals the
dynamic process of exchange and unifcation of discerning liturgical terms from the central (Carniolan) standard language and those from the Eastern Styrian standard variations. In the decisive moment Slomšek could surpass the local linguistic barriers and recognise the precedence of the Central Slovene standard language, since he was aware of the role that the consolidation of the standard language had in uniting a nation. He set a good example by participating in the modernisation of the oldest Christian terminology. He helped to create a uniform standard language which would be rich, understandable and at the same time acceptable for all Slovene people.
