Abstract:        The article analyses rather specifc texts from the stylistic and lexical point of view. The material involves 36 thematically diversifed pastoral letters that Slomšek as a bishop intended for the believers and clergy. He started writing letters as he became bishop in 1846 and wrote them until he died in 1862. The article presents the typical rhetorical elements of the author’s style, the word formation and syntactical features for establishing a link between the text and the reader (greetings, addresses, conclusions and cohesive devices), for expressing pedagogic-educational content, (inter-textual) persuasion and argumentation, for rhetorical
sophistication (antithesis, accumulation, parallelism, etc.) as well as a relevant choice of dialectical or standard words, synonymy, expressiveness, metaphors and metonymies, also peculiarities of the word formation.
