Abstract:  This article presents the most important historical moments in which the diocese seat in Maribor appeared as an important ecclesiastical centre. In the past there were several attempts to found another diocese in this part of the Slovenian territory but they all failed. As a result of the great political changes in the 19th and the 20th century experienced by the Slovenian ethnic territory, the borders of the diocese were defned over a longer period of time. Afterwards the Maribor diocese became such an important ecclesiastical institution that two new dioceses sprung up on its territory. The year 2006 was crucial for the Maribor Lavantine diocese. As the new ecclesiastical units were founded, Maribor became the seat of the metropolis and the metropolitan himself became the centre of the ecclesiastical province.
