Abstract:  In the treatise the author frst deals with the overview of the major important indexes of the development in Maribor in the period between 1859 (the transfer of the seat of the Lavantine diocese) and the beginning of the 1880s. He concludes that the city made progress in all respects. The author, however, does not discuss the then cultural, interethnic and language issues, nor the local politics. He examines the infuence which the transfer of the diocese seat had on the development of the city from diferent viewpoints. The treatise furthermore compares Maribor with other bigger Lower Styria cities, Celje and Ptuj.
