Abstract:  Because the seat of the diocese, the chapter and the newly founded theology were transferred to Maribor, it became the intellectual centre for the Styria Slovenes. The prince bishops Stepišnik and Napotnik improved the eforts of their predecessor in the feld of upbringing and education for the future Lavantine priests. Napotnik decided on a religious programme for the organisation. During the fve diocesan synods in 1896, 1900, 1903, 1906 and 1911 the infuence of modern life and thought as well as theological currents on the forms of religious life was discussed. The age of Napotnik was marked by the erection of new churches and the enlargement as well as embellishment of the old churches. The religious societies and fraternities came to life again. The orders promoted and spread their activities.
