Abstract: The paper discusses civil and ecclesiastical associations in the intermediary social sphere in Slovenia from the mid-19th century until today. We frst look at the circumstances that led to the transition lasting several decades from pre-modern to modern forms of associations. In the central part we analyse Bishop Slomšek’s activities in the intermediary sphere which found an expression in Sunday schools, the Hermagoras Society, the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius, reading societies etc. We are interested in the reasons for and goals of such extensive and successful work. We show the remarkable expansion of civil and ecclesiastical voluntary associational life at the end of the 19th and in the 20th centuries until its mass suspension during the occupation and Communism. The brief analysis of the current situation is concluded with a thesis about the unfnished transition of the Slovenian civil sphere.
