Abstract:      This article deals with the baroque altars in the St. John the Baptist Parish Church and Cathedral in the city of Maribor. When the diocese seat was transferred from St. Andraž to Maribor in 1859 there were thirteen altars in the church but their number was reduced to three before 1904 due to the conservation issues raised by the Central Committee for Research and Preservation of Cultural and Historical Monuments and due to the wishes of the people of Maribor. The article deals with the baroque altars and parts of altars which could be identifed in other churches and in the Maribor Regional Museum on the basis of written sources, photographs and citations in literature. The sculptors and painters, participating in the making of the altars as well as their contractors are also mentioned.
