Abstract:    In the period when Anton Martin Slomšek was head of the Lavantine diocese, the practice based on the bishop’s pastoral letters was gradually introduced. The predecessors of Slomšek prepared pastoral letters on special occasions. His contemporary in Ljubljana, A. Wolf (1824–1859) published seven letters on diferent occasions and nine letters to accompany the fasting period. The writing of these letters belonged to Slomšek’s regular activities: for every year of his service as a bishop he wrote a pastoral letter for the fasting period and on top of that he also wrote twenty pastoral letters on diferent ecclesiastical or national-political occasions.
