Abstract: The transfer of the seat of the diocese from Št. Andraž in Carinthia to Maribor in Styria formed part of major changes in the Church that had begun with Joseph II. These show the importance of language and nationality that rested on this transfer, an importance which, however, is still denied, in particular when it comes to Slovenians, by a large part of historiography. Besides the language/national background, the fnal disentanglement of these ideas will also have to include some administrative/judicial background, as was already pointed out by Sergij Vilfan. In the future, more attention must be paid to the amalgamation with the Slovenian part of the Graz-Seckau diocese and to pastoral problems. Slomšek was frst and foremost a Slovenian priest and bishop. Particularly because of the former, he was also a national-cultural worker. For this reason, he cannot be considered outside the political context; however, the hierarchy of his values must nevertheless be clear and unequivocal. For Slomšek, Slovenehood was an integral part of Slovene Catholicism, which he understood as a profound and sincere religion on the basis of a cultivated mother tongue, as well as self-confdent and educated believers.
